SALESMAN ROBBED GETTING INTO CAR
Austin, TX – October 28, 2010
After a sales call in a mall, a salesman went to his car. After he put his line in the trunk, a car pulled up and three male Hispanics armed with knives demanded his keys, which the salesperson threw to the ground before fleeing back inside the store he had left. When he returned to his car, the driver’s side window was broken, the trunk was open and his line was gone. Prior to this sales call, the salesperson had made other sales calls in San Antonio. The suspect vehicle was described as a dark gray, four-door with tinted windows, possibly a Chevrolet Impala, with rear spoiler and frosted rear tail lights.

SALESPERSON ROBBED GETTING OUT OF CAR
Houston, TX – October 19, 2010
After making four sales calls in the Galleria area, a salesperson from New York stopped at a restaurant. As he was getting out of his car, a dark gray Nissan Maxima with a CarMax paper license plate pulled up behind him. Two Hispanic males wearing hooded sweatshirts smashed the rear passenger window. A third suspect displayed a knife, and took the line from the salesperson as well as his car keys and personal watch.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Use evasive driving techniques after every sales call.

Physical Security — it’s often described as the “forgotten side of security” at some financial institutions, and yet it is a key element of an overall protection strategy.

And because the physical aspect plays a role in so many facets of security, from preventing bank robberies to foiling inside threats, risk assessment can be a challenge.

FBI Bank Crime Statistics 2009-2010:

According to the 2009-2010 FBI report, there are seven notable months in which most bank robberies occur (February, April, May, August, October, November, and December) combined with the most opportune high-risk robbery times (during the day at 1:00PM-5:00PM, of which 3:00PM-5:00PM being the most common).

During 5,943 Robberies, 100 Burglaries, and 19 Larcenies, a total of $45, 869,730 in cash and $45, 978,048 in Total Securities were taken; only 22% ($8,015,546) of securities taken were actually recovered.

Highest probabilities of criminal intentions were at branch-office banks (93.7% of facility types) located commercial districts and shopping centers (90.3% of locations). The report also shows that 5, 735 (88.5%) of bank robberies walk right in the front door and up to the counter using a Demand Note and a Weapon in 4,888 (82.2%) of all occurrences.

Unfortunately, out of 94 Hostages taken, 67 (71.2%) were Employees and 22 (23.4%) were Customers equaling 94.6% of all hostages taken.

Whitehawk Worldwide, a physical security and assessment company, conducts physical security assessments for financial institutions. We use a very in-depth, analytical approach to significantly lower your risk of robbery and to increase the protection of your employees. By MARTIN GRIFFITH, Associated Press Martin Griffith, Associated Press
23 mins ago

.RENO, Nev. – A gunman was holed up Friday at a Walmart store where he
worked after shooting three co-workers who were hospitalized with non-life
threatening injuries, police said.

Heavily armed police officers entered the building about four hours after
the lone gunman entered about 8:30 a.m. and opened fire on fellow
employees, Reno Deputy Police Chief Mike Whan said.

The name of the gunman has not been released.

“To our knowledge, he’s the only one in the store,” Whan told The
Associated Press.

One of the victims was shot critically, but “the prognosis is good for all
of them,” said Dan Fogleman, a spokesman for Wal-mart Stores Inc. He
provided no further details.

At least nine officers with rifles entered the store shortly after 12:30
p.m. Police believed the gunman was in a back room. Efforts to contact him
had been unsuccessful, Whan said.

Reno police Lt. Mohammad Rafqat said the man appeared to have a handgun,
and one of his victims was a manager at the store.

Employees were placed on a bus in the parking lot of a sporting goods
store next to the Walmart.

Jimmy Moses said he was dropping his wife off for her first day of work at
the store about 9 a.m. when police cars drove up and people fled the
Walmart.

Washoe County deputies, Sparks police and the FBI joined Reno police in
sweeping the store to be sure there were no hostages.

“They were very efficient. They got everybody out fast and they kept
everybody calm,” Moses told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

___

Associated Press correspondent Scott Sonner contributed to this report.

GRAB AND RUN SUSPECT WITH TATTOOS ON NECK AND HAND
Copley Township, OH – October 2, 2010

A black male suspect entered a chain retail jewelry store at 7:40 p.m. and asked to see “the largest diamond they had.” A sales associate showed the suspect a 3ct loose diamond. The suspect then asked to see a 4ct loose diamond. When he was handed this diamond, the suspect ran from the store.

The suspect is described as 25-years-old, 5’7” to 5’8”, 160 lbs., dark complexion, with a goatee and multiple tattoos on his neck and one on his left hand, and wearing a white dress shirt and black dress pants and shoes.

If you have information, call the Copley Police at 330-666-8866.

There was a similar case of a grab and run of a high-end watch in Novi, MI on June 22, 2010, in which the suspect had a tattoo on his right hand that read “get money,” and another on the right side of his neck that said “blessed.” If you have information, contact Detective Todd Anger at 248-347-0544.

RECOMMENDATION: When a “customer” asks to see “the largest diamond in the store,” or to see “your most expensive watch,” that is a time to get additional help from other employees in the store. Be extremely cautious in allowing a person making such a request to handle merchandise, and have another employee stand on the customer’s side of the counter. Many fine stores also ask for identification when showing high-end goods, and state that their insurance company requires that they ask for such identification. While there is no guaranty that this will discourage a determined grab and run thief, such precautions may cause the thief to see that you are serious about security and move on.

As this is being written not all the facts are known about a shooting incident at the University of Texas that has put the campus on lock down. Reports came into 911 early Tuesday morning about a man with a gun and shots fired outside the student library. Later shots were heard coming from inside the library. Campus security and police have responded finding on individual dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police are searching for a possible second gun man as well as for explosive devices.
Concealed Handgun on Texas university campuses have been a matter of debate since the Virginia Tech shootings a few years ago. The debate will continue I’m sure after this incident. Law-abiding citizens carrying concealed with proper training can save lives. In Texas we have the ability to apply for a Concealed Handgun License provided you meet all state requirements including a 10 hour class room course which requires testing shooting skills.
At Whitehawk we offer the required Texas Concealed Handgun Course with instructor Jan Price of PCTA-Firearms. We also offer a variety of handgun courses including Jason Falla’s Concealed Carry Course and Woman’s Concealed Carry Course. Having a gun is not enough; getting the right training is critical. Contact us today about these courses.
